When the day had pressed me small and the walls came closing in,
You enlarged me in my distress and gave me room again;
So I lay my head down easy where the trouble used to be —

O sons of men, how long will you go chasing after wind,
Turn my glory into shame and love the lie again?
But the Lord has set the godly apart to be His own,
And He hears me when I call — I am never on my own.

There are many who are asking, "Will there be any good?"
Lift the light of Your face upon us, be the sun above the wood;
And I've counted all their harvest, every barn and every vine —
But I found a deeper gladness, and I'll shout it one more time:

You have put a gladness in my heart!
More than all their corn and all their wine!
More than any harvest that this world could gather in —
Oh, this joy in You is mine!

So stomp your feet and lift the sound,
Let the glad and holy noise resound —
You have put a gladness, gladness in my heart,
And it will not be torn apart!

Stand in awe and turn from sin, lay your restless striving down,
Commune with your heart in the dark, be still and make no sound;
Offer up the sacrifice of a right and humbled heart,
And put your trust in Him alone who set you here apart.

Let the world go chase its vanity, let it run and let it roam,
I have found the only good there is, and He has made me home;
For a field of grain will wither and a brimming cup runs dry —
But this gladness that He gave me, it will never say goodbye.

More than all the reaping hands could ever bind —

More than store — (more than store!)
You're the very gladness I was aching for!

You have put a gladness in my heart,
